Folks I can't believe I'm writing this but we are officiallyless than THREE WEEKS until the 2024 Olympic Games!!!!!

18 DAYS!!!

And we have finally had our Aussie Olympic Rowing Team announced after months and months of selection.

Massive congratulations to the following WA rowers who were named to the team:

Annabelle McIntyre OAM

Bronwyn Cox

Giorgia Patten

Jacqui Swick

Josh Hicks

Annabelle (FRC) will race the Women's Pair, Bronnie (UWABC), Giorgia (WARC) and Jacqui (SRRC) will all race in the Women's Eight, and Josh (SRRC) will race in the Men's Eight.

Explore the Olympic regatta here: https://olympics.com/en/paris-2024/sports/rowing

Sure, you COULD watch the Olympic racing on your phone, by yourself on the couch...

OR! you could join us at The Rowing Pavilion - every and any night of the games, for FREE, to watch it on the big screen with the rest of the rowing community there to share the joy?!

Option two definitely sounds like more fun.

We're running an official Olympic Live Site in collaboration from the wonderful people at the Pav!

There's a huge big screen on the balcony, where we'll be able to watch every second of the racing live! The balcony area is now fully heated and closed in if the weather gets chilly!

Bookings are preferred so the Pav can organise staff etc. appropriately - if you reckon you, your club or your mates are going to head along, consider booking a balcony table at therowingpavilion.com.au and put 'rowing' in the comments section.

The (Tentative) Schedule - book in now!

The IGSSA Head of the River went off with a bang on Saturday 22 June with PLC taking their ninth consecutive Head of the River First VIII title, and 12th consecutive Overall Pointscore winners.

PLC were certainly the favourites for both heading into the regatta, and with a total of 14 wins on the day cemented their status as 2024's outstanding performers - a huge congratulations to PLC's rowers, support staff (including Director extraordinaire, David Milne!), and all their supporters who make rowing programs work. The PLC First VIII - as far as we can see - clocked the second fastest HOR time on record (6:48.23 - MLC's 2009 crew clocked 6:39.90) , partly thanks to the tailwind they were dealt and partly thanks to the great rowing and tenacity on display from this crew!

It wasn't a clean sweep by PLC though - St Hilda's won four events, showing strength through their Freshman and Year 9 groups, Penrhos and JTC three each, with some good success with their scullers and quads. MLC, PC and Iona were two a piece, with Iona impressively winning both the Year 9 A and B Quads in their first year in the IGSSA Rowing competition.

Huge congratulations to everyone involved in yet another amazing IGSSA season!

We are looking forward to seeing IGSSA Old Girls Bronnie Cox (MLC), Giorgia Patten (Perth College) and Jacqui Swick (PLC)!

The IGSSA Rowing Captains!

The longest Head Race in the Southern Hemisphere* took place last Saturday with record* entries!!

Competitors faced 16 long kilometres with a variety of conditions expected across the course. The more intrepid athletes were in sculls, a daunting task for even the most experienced among them! 23 Coxed Eights followed them out of the Narrows, into Matilda Bay and beyond. Swannies' Elinor Scott was kind enough to share her best navigational advice on the RWA Instagram - it was clear the crews who took that advice!!

Volunteer Marshals and Safety Boats dotted the course to ensure that crews were accounted for and safe - a massive thank you to all our BROs and club volunteers who filled these roles on the day!

The two big prizes on offer were for Line Honours for the Scull and the Eights - first sculler or eight to cross the line was the winner. RWA's GM Ops, Nick Wakeford, carefully adjusted the handicaps in the draw to come up with a fair starting order given the quality of the crews.

Through a blustery first 6kms, crews started to make their way closer to Fremantle RC and into the more protected waters offered at that end of the course.

ANA's Hilary Smale was the first Sculler across the line in a total time of 1:20:05, breaking clubmate James McGrath's winning streak in that event. Fremantle's Open Men's Eight took Line Honours for the Eights, in a total time of 50:59.69 - just a few seconds ahead of Swan River RC in a nailbiting drive to the finish!

ANA's Hilary Smale with the Sculling Line Honours trophy!

Fremantle's OM8+ with the Eights Line Honours trophy!

*Both unverified but we are pretty sure...

We are excited to announce several new initiatives for the upcoming 2024 Rowing WA Pennant Regatta Season. After careful consideration and feedback from our rowing community, we will be trialling a seat fee cap for the four Champion Lakes Pennant regattas this season, excluding the State Championships.

The maximum seat fee per athlete will be capped at $44.10, equivalent to three events. This trial aims to provide significant benefits to both athletes and clubs by making costs predictable and manageable. We hope this will allow athletes to better budget for regattas and encourage greater participation. While Rowing WA will see a reduction in revenue, we are optimistic that this will be offset by greater participation, with athletes racing in multiple events.

Number of Events

Seat Fee

1 event

$14.70

2 events

$29.40

3 or more events

$44.10

In addition to the fee cap, we are pleased to announce the expansion of the event programme to include a U19 1X (2000m) and alternating Masters 4- and 4X (1000m) events. The addition of a Masters 4- or 4X in the RWA Pennant regattas will give Masters athletes the option to race many 1,000m races during the Pennant season.

Please note that during 2024, we will not be looking to implement this in other RWA regattas (i.e., All Schools or Masters).

We look forward to seeing the positive impact these initiatives will have on our rowing community. Your feedback during this trial season will be invaluable in assessing the success of these changes and their potential for future seasons.

Should you have any questions or require further information, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thank you for your continued support.
