WA Rowers Continue International Success at WC3

What an absolute treat to see the WA elites produce brilliant performances with the Aussie team at the last of the World Cup series regattas! Have a look below for race wrap ups for each of the WA athletes' crews...

Women's Pair

Athletes: A. McIntyre (FRC) & J. Morrison

Result: Gold

Continuing their brilliant season, Jess and Annabelle came away from WC3 with another win! Progressing easily through the heats and semis, with margins of 3.5 and 9 seconds respectively over their nearest challengers, the final was a chance for them to race the 2023 European Champs Romania for the first time. As expected, they controlled the race from out of the blocks and led the field all the way to finish in a time of 7:00.84.

Annabelle: "We knew the crews in the Final were very strong, we had to push a bit earlier that we normally do, but we're very happy with that performance... We're going to build on our strong points and work on stuff that we need to strengthen - not necessarily weaknesses - stuff that will make us go faster."

Men's Double

Athletes: J. Cleary (WARC) & H. Moore

Result: Ninth

In one of the deepest fields in the whole regatta, this new combination raced extremely well to finish in the top end of their B-Final. In their heat they were just a few seconds behind eventual A-Finalists Romania, and got through their Repechage to the A/B Semis easily. However in the Semi they were bumped out of the last A-Final qualifying spot by eventual Bronze medalists, Ireland. In their final they had a super battle for second with the French crew where they were separated by less than half a second!

Women's Four

Athletes: G. Patten (WARC), K. Werry, S. Hawe, L. Stephan

Result: Silver

The Four, who were second at WC2, cruised through the opening round to book their Finals slot. A fast start and stomping rhythm saw the Aussies lead the star-studded field all the way to the 1500m... then the Romanians employed their infamous wind to the line, topping out at a whopping rate 47, and the girls were pipped for line honours by less than half a boat length, with about a length back to third placed GB. Absolute fire cracker of a race!! Bring on World Champs!

Lucy: "We're all racers, that's the cool thing about this crew... there's a lot of guts. So to go out and have a race like that taps into that inner thing that we all love to do"

Women's Eight

Athletes: L. Alton-Triggs, P. Barr, G. Gleeson, O. Aldersey, G. Rowe, J. Swick (SRRC), M. Goodman, B. Cox (UWABC), Cox: H. Verbunt

Result: Silver

In one of the most exciting races of the evening, Bronnie led the Eight to a canvas lead out of the start - and they held onto this 2-second gap through to the 1000m. By the 1500m, GB and Canada had reeled them back and there was less than half a second separating these top three crews! GB found just a little more speed than the rest in the closing stages to take line honours, but the Aussies had done enough work through the race to earn their podium spot.

Men's Eight

Athletes: P. Holt, J. Hicks (SRC), J. Robertson, T. Masters, A. Dawson, J. O'Brien, B. Canham, A. Widdicombe, Cox: K. Brodie

Result: Gold

Wow - the M8s hauled it down the course to win Australia's first international Gold in this event since the Sydney World Cup in 2011! After fending off a seriously quick start by Romania, and letting GB have a nose in front til just shy of the half way mark (talking a gap of 0.05 seconds), they took the rate up to 39 in the back half of the race and never looked back. What a thriller.

Fun fact: WA's Josh Hicks first race on a senior Aussie team was at a World Cup, in Lucerne, in the Men's Eight!!

Jack: "Knew it was going to be a quick start, we had to back in our race plan. It's something we've been trying to trust a bit more than we did in Varese. I think today we did a better job executing than we did a few weeks ago. "

Paddy: "We knew we had a quick last 500, we wanted to be in a good position at that part of the race. It's going so fast, but it's pretty good. We knew we had patches of speed here and there, now we need to go back to training."

The next time we'll see the Aussie Senior team race is at the World Rowing Championships - September 3 - 10 in Belgrade, Serbia!

Singapore Olympian Competing at Age Based Regatta

The Singapore National Rowing Team is in Perth for the next two weeks as a development opportunity for their Olympic campaign. The team is comprised of seven female athletes (including Tokyo Olympian Joan Poh) and one lighty male, plus several support staff and coaches. Their head coach, Goken Sakamoto, describes the group of athletes as 'passionate & hard-working' and we certainly get the sense that this group of rowers are full of heart, competitive spirit, and love for the sport!

Joan's story is very inspiring - the New York Times wrote about her journey to Tokyo in an article here.

The team will be targeting the Age Based Regatta (July 22nd) and will be at the Indoor Rowing Championships this Saturday.

Guildford Grammar School have generously offered to be the team's 'home base' during their trip. The team have expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Tony, Ethan & the Guildford team for their support!

Well done to Yuhan, Coach Goken & all the athletes for going all in on their Olympic journey. Whole-heartedly committing to a big dream is incredibly inspiring for those around you.

If you see them at Indoor Champs or the Age Based Regatta, or out training, please say hello and give them a big warm WA welcome!!

SA/WA Pathway Camp & Nullarbor Cup

Since 2019, SA and WA have come together annually for a camp with their top Pathway athletes. This year's camp was hosted in WA from July 7-11. Nick Collins from Aquinas College very generously allowed use of their shed space, equipment & facilities. Each state invited it’s brightest and most enthusiastic Pathway-tier athletes to the camp with the intention of developing big boat skills, fostering a competitive spirit in our young performers, and creating a meaningful competitive opportunity for this group of athletes at a crucial point of the National pre-season.

Rowers on this camp competed for the ‘Nullarbor Cup’. The competition was devised in 2019 and is contested every time the camp takes place. Tony Lovrich has created a beautiful trophy made up of welded railway pegs (from the Trans-Australian Railway) and an old brass oarlock to symbolise the connection between the two states. The WA and SA groups are split into mixed gender teams of 8 or 9 and stay in these teams for the two legs of the competition. Leg 1 of is a biathlon (erg and run) and Leg 2 is a 2000m race in 8+s. WA and SA were tied in a dead heat in the biathlon, but the WA 2 team had a brilliant race and made sure the Nullarbor Cup stayed here!

A very big thanks to Tom, Christine, Nick and all the coaches who assisted on this camp.

Indoor Rowing Champs on Tomorrow

Fremantle RC are hosting this year's WA Indoor Rowing Championships - tomorrow at Swan Yacht Club!

For the first time at an Indoor State Champs, clubs will be competing for Pennant Points - and with over 70 competitors in the 2km events and 64 athletes competing in Relay teams, it's going to be hot competition.

During the lunch break we'll be running a hotly anticipated Fish Game High Score contest for anyone who wants a go... the premier event of the day of course!

Medal and trophy presentations will take place at 4pm with trophies being awarded to the Fastest overall Male and Female 2km and 1km.

We have a limited number of remaining slots in the Relay events for on-the-day signups.

Looking forward to a great day!!

Age Based Regatta - Entries Close Soon

In an exciting move that will see one of our regattas align with the Nationals event program, the AGE BASED REGATTA is happening next weekend! Athletes will race in categories based on their age rather than their grade score in Under 17/Under 19/Under 21 and Open events. 2000m and 1000m is on offer in a large variety of boat classes.

The regatta will be hosted by West Australian Rowing Club who always do a great job on the BBQ!

Entries close on Monday 17th July at midnight.

Swan River Rowing Club's 1912-1913 Annual Report

In this new section we'll share cool bits of history from our community! If you have an archive room, box of old annual reports, photos laying around in the back of your shed - please get in touch, we would love to dust them off and re-live past moments!

1913 - The Year for "POSSESSION OF THE PENNANT" for Swans!

Boats and Gear: Honorary Secretary W. G. Hastings' Report on behalf of the SRRC Committee contained some advice that no doubt clubs are still giving to their rowers...

Schools Regatta: The Christians (now Aquinas College), the High School (now Hale School), and the Guildfords all trained out of SRRC in 1912. A new-fangled eight-oared event was on the cards for the schoolboys this year...

Ladies' Committee: 'Women in Rowing' was limited to the 'Ladies' Committee' (although women have been rowing in WA to various extents since the late 1800s). Mrs. Lapsley, Mrs. MacQueen, Mrs. Connell & Miss Trenaman organised Social Events, entertained guests, and managed to net £16 (equivalent to about $2,500 in today's money) for the club!

Social: By far the longest section is the 'Social' report. December 1912's 'Debt Extinction Night' sounds like it was a legendary night... after everyone finished chanting "The Debt is dead!!" and singing the "Dead March", and there was a "stilly silence" in the room, everyone stood to their feet "while the Chairman solemnly bourne to ashes the Bond that had for so long kept the Club a liquidating debtor... and many an Executive officer, past and present, felt proud and glad for the complete fulfilment of a heavy trust".

Finally, to round things up Mr. Hastings concludes with the following:

What a way to round out an annual report! Maybe in 2023, the 110 year anniversary of Hastings' 'Possession of the Pennant' year, Swans will take back the pennant from last year's winners WARC...?

Thanks Simone Burge for allowing access to the SRRC archive room/attic!!

RWA is proud to announce the return of ‘Water Horse Polo’ tournament to be held at the Act Belong Commit All Schools State Championships 2023.

As we all know, Rowing is a great competitive sport but should also include teamwork, fun, commitment, and a sense of belonging.

But what is Water Horse Polo?? It’s an on-water ball competition where rowers face-off, three aside, with one person on land (to act as goalie). The aim is to keep possession of the ball, whilst manoeuvring towards your goal in our plastic tub sculls. Think water polo, but in boats…

Designed to be quick and fun, each team competes in two 5-minute halves to score as many goals as possible by throwing the ball to your goalie teammate, located on a pontoon.

This competition is aimed at testing your communication, teamwork and skills whilst being a lot of fun. The winning team will receive an "Act Belong Commit" kit including hats, socks and drink bottles.

  • What: Water Horse Polo Tournament
  • When: During the lunch break of the All Schools State Champs
  • Where: Meet at the Making Waves shed, ready to compete on the warmup lake
  • Who: Anyone!
  • Why: To foster teamwork, ingrain skills and have fun!

Please email your team of four to the Development & Operations Coordinator by Friday, 11.08.2023 - 4pm.
