RSA Derails Competition at Corporate Challenge

Rowing WA’s Corporate Challenge Regatta on Saturday saw crews from Roy Hill, Bellevue Gold and Rail Systems Australia battle it out over three rounds of racing. The event was the culmination of an eight-week Corporate Learn-to-Row Program, where participants spent many cold, early mornings learning how to make their boats move – a feat that anyone who has stepped into a racing shell before knows is tough. On race day, early favourites Roy Hill had two boats in the mix, and their top crew made it through undefeated to the A Final… however, a costly technical mistake through the middle of the race left them unable to contend for the win and Rail Systems Australia will return to the office on Monday with bragging rights. Roy Hill’s second crew defeated Bellevue Gold easily in the B Final, and the company were also victors in the Fours Race at the end of the day. Swan River Rowing Club and The University of WA Boat Club hosted the corporates, putting each crew through an eight-week Learn to Row program and supporting them on Regatta Day with coaching, equipment and hospitality.

We were lucky enough to have Rowing Australia Patron and Roy Hill Executive Chairman Mrs. Gina Rinehart AO join us during the regatta to watch the racing and show her support!

We were also joined by very special guest FAT CAT who came down to drum up support for the Telethon (who one of the corporates, Roy Hill, are long-time supporters!).

If you couldn't make it down in person, the whole thing was live streamed, complete with commentary from the very best that we could bribe... dynamic duo Jamie Hewlett and Gen Hart!! The live stream footage will be available for everyone to relive their glory very soon.

Anyway, read on to find out all about our 2023 Corporate Crews!

THE CORPORATES

Bellevue Gold

Hosted by Swan River Rowing Club

"Bellevue Gold has assembled a high-grade, nimble, diverse and effective team much like the Bellevue Gold mine. The team has been training three times a week for the last six weeks and are ready for the big regatta. Later this year production will commence at its flagship Bellevue Gold Project and the Company will be pouring gold, which will place the mine in the top twenty largest gold mines in Australia, and the company has the aspirational goal to reach net zero emissions by 2026.

Coached by Perry Ward, Ross Brown and Mike Hinsley, strongly supported by Neville Kempton and Simone Burge!

After the regatta, Bellevue Gold, led by Darren Stralow, is looking forward to taking what they’ve learnt from the coaches and support team at SRRC and applying it to the Bellevue business. This may include (but not be limited to) mandated rowing themed outfits for the Christmas party and corporate teambuilding exercises that mimic real life Survivor episodes.  In addition, the idea of future merger and acquisition negotiations being settled by challenging other CEOs to a head to head knock out – winner takes all has been floated."

Rail Systems Australia

Hosted by UWA Boat Club

"Rail Systems Australia started in Perth in 2016 and has grown to a national business of 150 engineers, technical rail specialists and project delivery team members. Our work in Perth includes signalling and station systems for Bayswater station, the new Morley Ellenbrook line and the elevation of the Armadale line

Only 2 of those 150 have any rowing experience, so it has been a real learning curve for those that bravely signed up to participate in the Corporate rowing training. With great support from UWA coaches our crew has navigated the cold weather, crew member European holidays, and the obstacles dotted around the swan river, to get to the start line full of enthusiasm.

We are a very multicultural company, and the rowing crew reflects that, with representation from Sweden, Mongolia, Spain, Malaysia, UK and Australia.

The purpose of RSA having a rowing team in this event is all about team building within the company. Rowing is an amazing sport to bring together team members – learning about each other along the way. Its been a great way to bring this team together and we have come a long way since the first water session. Having the corporate regatta at the end of the process has been a great goal, but regardless of the results, the experience will be remembered by everyone and the company and employees will all be better for it."

Roy Hill

Hosted by Swan RIver Rowing Club

"Roy Hill are proud to support three charities who provide care, help and hope to people facing a variety of challenges. Their racing uniform represents these three charities....

Pink represents the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Blue represents Men's Health through the Movember charity, and the sleeves are the Telethon PJ Print support medical research into childhood diseases, provide equipment, critical services and life-changing opportunities for sick, disadvantaged and vulnerable children. In 2022, the Hancock Prospecting Group donated a total of $3 million to the Telethon through workplace giving and a $2 million donation from Hancock Prospecting!

"Through Hancock Prospecting Group, Roy Hill is an Australian Olympic Partner and we were lucky enough to have Olympic rowers Cameron Girdlestone and Luke Letcher join us for training last Friday, which was a great experience for the whole team!

Our Executive Chairman Mrs Rinehart AO is of course the patron of Rowing Australia and through the Patron’s Medal Achievement Incentive Fund announced last week, has committed $3 million over two years in the lead up to and the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will provide performance-based payments to the country’s best rowers, swimmers, volleyball players and artistic swimmers should they win medals at a World Championship, and Olympic or Paralympic Games."

Thank you to everyone who supported the event on the day, including our wonderful BROs Brett, Paul and Luke, and every volunteer, corporate rower, and club member who had a hand in making it a success! We hope to see it back bigger and better next year so stay tuned!

Para & Communications Working Groups

In our ongoing efforts to energise various development spaces, we're calling for interested people to join two working groups!

Working Group commitments can be as minimal or extensive as you want to make them, and you don't need to be an expert or even experienced in that area - the important thing is that we have people who care about the same things in the same place at the same time, so that we can work together to create change in our communities

GROUP 1: PARA ROWING

A previously successful Working Group, we'd love to revitalise this area. We have tapped some absolute legends - Paralympics Australia staff & Classification experts - to join this group as soon as we have a couple of rowing community members, so we are hoping it will be a real force for positive change! I really encourage anybody with a passion for inclusion, para sport, growth of our community, or with experience working with People with a Disability, to send me an email, and I'll send out some more information!

Read about Para Rowing in Australia here.

GROUP 2: COMMUNICATIONS

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve club communications and foster open conversations with the broader community, we are excited to announce the formation of an informal "Communications Working Group."

Our aim is to ensure effective and engaging communication within each club. To accomplish this, we are seeking a dedicated contact person from each club who currently manages club communications/runs the Instagram/writes the newsletter, or, in cases where this isn't established, someone willing to take on the responsibility of initiating these efforts.

Once we have a group together, we plan to organize an info session on how RWA and individual clubs can collaborate to maximize the potential of social media, newsletters, and other communication platforms to promote the sport. We have already witnessed significant progress in utilizing Instagram for our recent local and international events, as well as for small celebrations and updates. This elevation is a step in the right direction, and we deeply appreciate the clubs that have been sharing our posts, demonstrating a seamless sense of unity.

If you, or someone you know, would be interested in getting involved in these areas please let us know via email or a phone call! Ask all your questions, get some answers, jump on board.

Aussies Gearing Up for Worlds!

This is your reminder that we have a huge group of WA athletes racing in the World Champs team, 3-10 September!!

The Australian Rowing Team are making their final preparations over in Italy before the 2023 World Rowing Championships kicks off on September 3. The week of racing is the culmination of the International racing season for the team, and the first opportunity for our crews to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games. World Cup 3, held back in July, was the last time we saw them all race and it was one heck of a regatta - a few crew shuffles here and there between then and now but we're looking strong in the hunt for medals!

Rupert Guinness, RA's legendary Media Man, is in location with the team in Italy and his social media channels show the team going through their final speedwork sessions before their taper begins. You can follow him on Instagram here.

The final schedule is yet to be released (subject to the Random Lane Draw, set to take place on September 2) but you can browse the initial programme on the World Rowing Event Page here.

In conjunction with two metro clubs, we'll be hosting World Champs Watch Parties on the 9th and 10th of September to coincide with the Finals - stay tuned for details!
Free entry, open to everybody, food & drink available to purchase, 5 - 9:30pm both nights!

SECOND KEYNOTE SPEAKER ANNOUNCED

Judith, a legend of our sport, led an outstanding career as a sweep rower for Germany, winning Olympic Gold and Bronze medals and earning the 1989 World Championship in the Women's Pair. Her decorated career as an athlete is matched by her coaching palmares - a six time Australian National Team coach with two medals (and a World Championship) to boot. Judith coaches at UTS Haberfield Rowing Club, and is Head Coach at St Augustine's College (NSW), where she has developed one of the country's leading High Performing school rowing programs. In 2022, this reputation was cemented when the St Augustine's U19 Coxed Four became Junior World Champions. Not only do the St Augs rowers achieve excellence while at school, but often go on to continue their rowing careers in clubs and on National teams well past Year 12. Judith will share her invaluable insights into how coaches can develop school rowers and rowing programs to bring out the best in the students and set them up for success.

You can read about Judith's experience with her World Champion U19M4+ here.

Judith will join Paul Thompson MBE as the two keynote presenters for the Rowing WA 2023 Coaching & Officiating Conference - NOVEMBER 4!

65 rowers and coxswains and 15 coaches have put their names in the goblet of fire (as Josh Hicks put it so eloquently) for the 2024 WA State Team! Nominations closed last night at midnight and now it's over to the Selection Panel to put those nominees through their paces to produce the fastest crews for next year's Interstate Regatta.

Rowers who have nominated for Senior Crews (KC/QC/PC/VC) face their first Event Requirement this weekend in the Pennant Regatta 4 A/B Grade Single Scull, then in a small boat at State Champs, then a 5km Erg later in September.

This year's selection panel is made up of Jamie Hewlett (WAIS Head Rowing Coach), Tim Perkins (Rowing WA Board Director - High Performance), and Nick Collins (Rowing WA State Team Selector & Director of Rowing at Aquinas College).

In the Spotlight: Hugh Cook

Hugh Cook, age 94, recently donated equipment to the Making Waves program at Champion Lakes. You may already know of Making Waves, but just in case you don’t, it's a Rowing WA program aimed at school students in the City of Armadale area. Making Waves delivers a unique program curriculum to its participants. Through both on and off water activities, the program provides an opportunity for individuals to grow, provides motivation and looks to build self-confidence and belief in the participants. Hugh has decided to retire from on-water rowing, and has recently donated his MQR single plus blades to the Making Waves program.

We are grateful for his generosity and the Making Waves program now has a beautifully maintained racing scull to use!

Michael Hawkins, Making Waves coach and Rowing WA BRO, delivered Hugh's equipment for us - when he dropped the oars off to our office last week, he stopped for a chat...

"I mentioned to Dan that Hugh had got back into rowing after I’d shown him a photo of a UWABC VIII crew taken in 1948 and asked him if he knew the H Cook who was named as a member of the crew. Hugh said “Yes, it’s me. That year we rowed against crews from the other Australian Universities and the winning crew represented Australia at the Olympics. We came second.”

UWABC's President, Jeremy Gillbanks, managed to track down some brilliant photos of this crew who just missed out on Olympic selection!

If anybody would like a closer look please get in touch and we can get the images sent to you in higher quality

Do you want to see your name on an Aussie Team list?

Do you enjoy the challenge of training and racing hard?

Do you have long levers, high overall strength and endurance capacity?

How about an appetite for challenge and hard work?

Maybe this sounds like you, or someone you know.

Discover your potential at the WAIS Talent Search on Saturday 9th September 2023.

As we enter an exciting decade of sport culminating in a home Olympic Games in 2032, WAIS are looking for the next generation of Western Australian athletes. If you are aged between 13 and 18, or you know someone who is, you should seriously consider heading to this event (or sending the registration form to them!!).

On the central testing day, athletes will be required to complete a series of physiological and anthropometric tests that will gauge their individual suitability for specific high-performance attributes within rowing, cycling, and kayaking.

Athletes who achieve success will receive an invitation to participate in a sport-specific training program tailored to their chosen sport, based on the results of the testing.

Many of you in the community will know Tom Gatti, WAIS Rowing Coach and Pathway Coordinator - well, he's your guy - get in touch with him with any questions you have at tgatti@wais.org.au.
