2022 World Rowing Championships Update

Australian Rowing Team Continues to Achieve "Oarsome" Results at #WRC2022
Day 3: Tuesday, 20th September 2022
With the rain coming down on Labe Arena, the preliminary race of the women’s eight brought the third day of racing to a close.
The crew consisting of Eleanor Price, Jean Mitchell, Paige Barr, Jacqueline Swick (SRRC), Ella Bramwell, Giorgia Patten (WARC), Georgina Rowe, Emma Fessey and cox Talia Barnet-Hepples started strong and kept pace with traditional Eights powerhouses – The Netherlands, United States and Canada, but were unable to match the three said crews in the last 500 metres. Our girls finished in fourth position but were still very positive about their performance.
After the race, World Championships debutants Barr and Bramwell both said;
“It is exciting to be selected for this crew. We know where we need to improve and make the necessary changes to step up for the next race.” |
Day 4: Wednesday, 21st September 2022
Another cold day, but fast, flat-calm conditions in Racice with an abnormal number of photo finishes across events at this quarter final stage of the Regatta.
A photo finish was needed to separate the four hundredths of a second between third and fourth place and qualification for the A/B Semi-Final in the Men’s Single Scull Quarter Final. There was fierce racing across the course with all scullers vying for one of the three qualifying spots, first and second were decided early on but the race went to the line with a late surge from a Swedish sculler. WA's Jack Cleary (WARC) was less than 10cm ahead but secured third position – meaning the right side of qualification.
Coach Lyall McCarthy OAM shared;
“Jack has done enough today; he has got through to the next round and we take each step at a time. He is learning a lot as it is his first Senior World Championships and getting through to the A/B Semi-Final is a good result. He still has lots to learn and needs to step up in that category, but he is up for the task.” |
Day 5: Thursday, 22nd September 2022
Four additional A-Finals were fought for and confirmed on day five of racing with high quality competition across events, showing the depth of racing in the field. These four crews will join five other crews who have confirmed their A-Final positions across the first five days of racing.
Four crews in the Women’s Coxless Four Second Semi-Final – Australia, Netherlands, and Romania and Denmark – went “toe to toe” to qualify for this weekend’s A-Final. The Australian quartet of Annabelle McIntyre OAM (FRC), Bronwyn Cox (UWABC), Katrina Werry and Lucy Stephan OAM were in second position for most of the race but were pipped on the line by the fast-finishing Romanian crew. Our girls came third and qualified for the A-Final.
The spotlight for the last three days of competition will be firmly focused on the A-Final races.
