Indoor Rowing Success for WA Competitors!
New World & Australian Records Achieved
The sporting action & adrenalin spread right across the Gold Coast for the 10-day multi-sport Pan Pacific Masters Games last month. A total of 18,000 medals were awarded in 42 sports to the 13,500 participants who came from every corner of Australia & 25 countries including teams from the UK, Canada, Sri Lanka and Guam.
Legendary WA Indoor Rowers, Sharon Jones (CUBC) & Marian Mitchell, took part in the Pan Pacific Masters Games Indoor Rowing on 7th & 8th November, competing with over 150 athletes from ages 30 up to the 85 to 89 years category. There was a 2km event, a 1km event and a 500m event as well as a 100m dash and a 1 minute row for distance. There was also a team’s relay 4 x500m (mixed teams).
Marian won all 5 events in the heavyweight women’s section for 70 to 74 year old women, while Sharon competed in 5 events as well in the heavyweight women 60 to 64 year - and won all five! That's a 100% success rate for 2 women from WA (10 races for 10 wins) - awesome ladies!
In addition to that, Sharon also equaled the age group world record for the 100m dash (18.2 seconds) and broke the world record (it’s now official on the concept 2 site) for the 1 minute row for distance – managing 314 meters for 1 minute.
The image below shows Sharon at the end of the competitor row in the 1 minute dash, proudly wearing her Curtin Uni Boat Club colours. A volunteer is standing in place at the end of the erg to stop it from moving!
