Rowing WA presents the 2023 Coaching & Officiating Conference!
Day 1 - Saturday November 4th, 2023
Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries building, Leederville
9:00am - 5:00pm
We're THRILLED to bring some of Australia's most experienced and innovative rowing minds to this year's Conference. Each presenter has been hand-selected by the Conference team to bring a varied and engaging group of people all the way over here to Perth!!
For the first time, the Conference will be split into two streams - one for Coaching and one for Officiating.
At the start of the day, everyone will come together to hear from Sarah Cook OAM (Rowing Australia CEO) and Jason Lane (Pathways Head Coach) about 'the Future of Rowing in Australia'
Then, we'll split into streams so that everyone hears the most relevant presentations to them...
Coaches will hear from:
Judith Ungemach, about The St Augustine's Story & how you can build an exceptional program too... Not just for school coaches - Judith will tell us how she created change in a group that started at square one, the foundations she instilled at St Augs that apply to ANY team who want to improve their culture, no matter the age or context.
Paul Thompson MBE, about his experience as Head Coach of the Chinese and British Rowing Teams, and now as Performance Director of Rowing Australia - amazing stories of athlete journeys, the differences between systems, and of course a heap of coaching advice that he's learned in his 30+ years working with the best rowing teams in the world.
Sarah Cook OAM, Jason Lane, Jamie Hewlett and Ken Davey, in a panel discussion about how to develop 'The Whole Coach' - whether you manage a team of coaches who you want to support, or you're looking to develop yourself, this is YOUR chance to ask questions from a diverse and experienced panel!
Jamie Hewlett & Mat Doyle in a Tech Tutorial - a quick bite from some of the coaches who know our community best!
Officials will hear from:
Nick Hunter, about the rules & operations behind thrilling new sports of Coastal Rowing and Beach Sprints (virtual presentation)... Nick's incredibly engaging style, passion for the sport and for high quality Umpiring will be the perfect introduction for most of us who haven't seen these sports before!
And BRILLIANT workshop all about Communication Skills, custom built for our conference and run by Professional Development Training! Research shows us that good umpiring is based on a foundation of good commnunication - communicating with athletes in a way that encourages fairness, cooperation, adherence to the Rules of Racing - not to mention delivering and explaining difficult decisions, preventing and resolving conflict.... This in-depth, interactive workshop which will equip us with tools to communicate better and enhance the WA Officiating Style!

Swan River Rowing Club
9:00am - 1:00pm

9am Session 1: The Australian Technical Model with JL (45 - 60 mins)
- Jason will run through the Australian Technical Model – what it means, why it is the way it is, how to coach it & what it looks like.
- Session available to any coach who has registered for the main conference.
10am Session 2: How to Rig like the Pros with JL/JB (2 hours)
- Downstairs at SRRC. Hands-on, practical rigging skills with the best in the biz.

- Please encourage all athletes, parents, coaches to attend who are interested in learning about the pathways for Year 11s and 12s.
I'll look to organise a BBQ lunch afterwards for Sunday. I think a good opportunity for Year 11s/12s to interact with club rowers so I will speak with clubs to make sure they have reps there at Session 3 who are ready to mingle with the school rowers!!
So to be clear:
If you register for the Coaching Stream for the conference, not only do you get a full day of amazing insight on Saturday, but you can now access the SUNDAY SESSIONS – THREE extra sessions with two of the most experienced coaches in the country (maybe even the world?) ABSOLUTELY FREE.
AND! EVERY SINGLE REGISTRATION GOES INTO THE DRAW TO WIN A COACHING SESSION WITH JASON LANE!!
Can't wait to see you all there!!
